The pressure tank holds a cushion of air that lets the pump rest between uses. The pressure switch tells the pump when to start and stop. When either fails, the pump either won't run or runs far too often. These are some of the cheapest well repairs, and fixing them early saves the pump.
Call (321) 220-9883Tank trouble
- Short cycling. The pump clicks on every few seconds while water runs. The tank has lost its air charge or its bladder has failed.
- Knock test. A healthy bladder tank sounds hollow at the top. If it sounds full all the way up, it's likely waterlogged.
- Water from the air valve on top of the tank means a ruptured bladder.
- Rust or weeping seams on older steel tanks.
Switch trouble
- The pump won't kick on until you tap the switch.
- Burnt or pitted contacts, often after a storm.
- Ants. Florida fire ants love nesting in switch housings and can jam the contacts.
- Clogged pressure-sensing tube under the switch, so it misreads.
What the fix involves
A contractor checks the tank's air charge against the switch settings, tests the switch, and checks the gauge. Sometimes a recharge is all it needs. Failed bladders and rusted tanks get replaced, with the new tank sized so the pump runs fewer, longer cycles.
Common questions
Is short cycling an emergency?
Not yet, but it wears out the pump. Get it checked within days, not months.
How long does a pressure tank last?
Many last 10 years or more. Water quality and how hard the system works make a big difference.
Can I just replace the pressure switch myself?
It's mains voltage, so only if you're qualified. A contractor will also check that the tank and switch settings match.
